If you run a business in Gibraltar with between one and fourteen employees, there is a date that belongs in your diary: 1 July 2027.
By then, micro employers must give eligible employees access to a workplace pension scheme under the Private Sector Pensions Act 2019.
This is the final stage of a phased rollout that began in August 2021.
Enterprises and large employers went first, medium-sized businesses followed in July 2025, and small employers reached their staging date in July 2026.
Now it is the turn of the small businesses, boutiques, start-ups, consultancies and family firms that make up so much of Gibraltar's economy.
Why act now?
Eight months may sound generous, but setting up a pension scheme takes time. You have to choose a scheme, align payroll, explain the arrangement to staff and set up contribution processes. In our experience, the businesses that start early enjoy a smooth transition. The ones that leave it until June often find themselves rushing decisions that deserve proper thought.
What are your options?
Employers can meet their obligations through a Group Personal Pension Scheme (GPPS) or an Occupational Pension Scheme. For smaller businesses in particular, the difference matters:
- Occupational schemes leave the employer responsible for the scheme, its members and its investments, including annual reports, audits and trustee liability insurance.
- With a GPPS, a professional trustee takes on governance, compliance and investments. The employer's main obligation is to make sure contributions are paid on time.
- When an employee leaves a GPPS, their pension goes with them. The employer has no ongoing responsibility.
For a micro business without a dedicated HR or finance team, that simplicity is often the deciding factor.
How we can help
At Line Group we administer a GPPS approved by the Commissioner of Income Tax, with a licensed and regulated corporate trustee providing trusteeship. Our team handles the administration and compliance, and guides you through a straightforward set-up process.
A little planning now could save you a real headache next summer. If you are a micro employer, or you advise one, get in touch for an informal, no-obligation conversation about your options.
